UR services must be performed in a timely fashion - in many environments, including CA Workers' Comp, there are severe penalties for delays or inadequate responses.

UR programs must also be practical. Non-preauthorized services must be evaluated to determine wither retro UR is necessary. Likewise, recommendations (authorizations as well as denials) must be rendered in the context of the patient's overall circumstances.
